A smelting works, often also called iron and steel works or foundry, is a plant for producing iron and/or steel from iron ore. These are usually industrial plants in Europe today.
The basic materials for manufacturing pig-iron are iron ore and coke. The preparation is made using floatation or magnetic separation. The ore is crushed. Oxidize iron ores are reduced with carbon and pig-iron is produced which is a brittle material due to the high carbon content and softens when heated within a small temperature range. Obtaining the pig-iron is mainly done in blast furnaces.
